Hypothyroidism has been touted as a condition where the thyroid gland fails to create enough of thyroid hormone known as thyroxine. This hormone in fact regulate the way in which our body uses energy metabolism. In the absence of thyroxine many of our body’s functions may slow down. The thyroid in our body creates two thyroid hormones known as triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) which regulate metabolism. If our thyroid gland does not produce thyroid hormone, hypothyroidism may occur. Which in fact affects a person’s breathing, brain development, skin dryness, menstrual cycles, weight, body temperature, and heart and nervous system functions. This condition develops slowly and may go unnoticed for a long period of time. However with proper diet you can control the condition of hypothyroidism.
- Avoid soy food which comprises soybeans, soy milk, tofu etc. As soy is very estrogenic as estrogens inhibit the thyroid gland from secreting its thyroid hormones. However, you will find some programs which recommend the soy diet in hypothyroidism, but in reality you should avoid soy.
- Discard polyunsaturated fats in your diet like soybean oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, as well as fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring and trout. However, for years the stress has been on its constructive properties overlooking the research which shows dangers of taking this fat in diet.
- Take Saturated Fats – These fats improve body’s insulin response which helps in preserving balanced blood sugar levels and reduce stress hormones. For this purpose take only high quality saturated fats in your diet. This fat contains fats from grass fed and grass finished animals, butter and coconut oil.
- Eat Fruit – Most of the fruits are rich in potassium, which plays a vital role in regulating your blood sugar level. This too decrease the requirement of insulin which helps in keeping your blood sugar more stable for longer periods. However, avoid avocados.
- Eat more salt – Hypothyroidism patients should eat more salt. It’s the sodium which properly regulate your blood pressure. When your sodium level is low, it slows down your metabolism and increases your stress hormones which can aggravate sleep problem.
- Eat Shellfish – Shellfish is a good source of thyroid hormone. Shellfish is naturally high in selenium. As selenium is the key nutrient which can convert an inactive T4 to active T3 thyroid hormone in your liver.
- Drink Coffee – Coffee on an empty stomach is recommended, as it is high in caffeine and works in stimulating the thyroid. It’s high in magnesium and Vitamin B which is necessary for proper thyroid function.
