The Wide Range Health Benefits of Aloe Vera

in Health News

Numerous studies have shown that aloe helps to recover from certain diseases and conditions.

Aloe Vera, a type of plant with thick and juicy leaves, whose homeland is the dry regions of Africa and India, has been used for centuries by both food and traditional medicine. A popular remedy, especially for light burns and abrasions, aloe vera juice is also consumed for many other conditions and diseases, and in some countries is widely popular, similar to other types of natural juices.

Aloe Vera and antioxidants

Aloe Vera contains many antioxidants that protect us from cancer, according to a study published in 2010 in the Journal of Environmental Pathology, Toxicology and Oncology. The results show that the greatest benefit is the combined oral and topical application of aloe vera and that the plant can protect against skin cancer, including melanoma – partly because of the high concentration of antioxidants such as vitamins A, C and E, and minerals like selenium and zinc.

Fights inflammation

The anti-inflammatory properties of aloe vera are useful in the treatment of ulcerative colitis, according to the results of a 2004 study published in Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics. The test subjects were given 100 ml aloe vera juice twice a day for four weeks. Symptoms of ulcerative colitis have significantly decreased, and colon tissue recovered slightly. The authors of the study concluded that aloe vera juice is safe and effective in the treatment of ulcerative colitis and there are plans scientist make to carry out further studies on potential uses of aloe vera in people with inflammatory bowel disease.

Aloe Vera and Heart Health

Aloe Vera is good for the heart, researchers say in their work published on January 2010 in Journal of Pharmaceutical Pharmacology.

In the study, laboratory animals were given 200 mg of aloe vera per kilogram of body weight  twice a day. The goal was to reduce oxidation and restore the antioxidant status to normal. After 20 days, the results showed that aloe vera has raised glutathione antioxidant levels four times, which is indication for the  heart protection properties of the plant.

Action against cancer

The combination of aloe vera and honey can protect us from cancer, according to research findings published in 2010  by Phytotherapy Research. A combination of aloe vera juice and honey helps in the shrinking of tumors. The researchers concluded that aloe vera and honey can be used to prevent cancer cell proliferation and to promote apoptosis-programmed cell death.
